Water hygiene
| Water which appears to be clean
often harbours high populations of disease-causing micro-organisms
(pathogens). Even water that is clean at source is quickly
contaminated by birds.
These pathogens thrive in water, decreasing quality and causing
further knock-on effects:
Poor water quality = poor consumption = reduced health
and welfare = poor performance

Pathogens
Pathogenic organisms commonly found in avian environments mainly
comprise:
Bacteria:
Campylobacter
E.coli
Salmonella
Stapylococcus
Pseudomonas
Viruses:
Avian influenza strains
Newcastle Disease
Aqualution achieves instant kill for all of these pathogens.
Bio-film
In addition to populations of bacteria, viruses and fungi, build
up of bio-film is common in avian drinker systems.
Bio-film is a woven matrix of micro-organisms. It is essentially
a dynamic colony of bacteria and viruses attached to the inner surfaces
of the water system which can also be described as slime. Bio-film
provides a nutritious surface for bacteria to adhere to and grow.
In addition it reduces equipment life-span and requires regular
cleaning.
Algae
Algae is unsightly and requires regular cleaning – using Aqualution
greatly reduces the build up of algae on drinkers, thus reduces
the time needed for cleaning. The effect of Aqualution on algae
build-up is demonstrated on the photos below, taken on a partridge
rearing site where half the drinkers were treated with Aqualution,
and half were untreated.
