Solosan™ is used to treat drinking water for poultry and cattle especially where mains water is expensive. It also has advantages in cleaning sheds and milking parlours. It can reduce the incidence of diseases such as salmonella and campylobacter in poultry; and mastitis and digital dermatitis in cattle.
In dairy farming, Solosan offers a single solution to many of the infection control needs of the herd. The system is based on installation of one or more generating machines on farm. The output of Solosan is used:
- to treat the water supply to the parlour and drinking troughs. This often makes it possible to use ground-source or bore-hole water instead of mains
- Solosan-treated water is safe to drink, keeps troughs clean and reduces the bacteriological challenge cows (and especially calves) have to deal with
- and at higher conentrations Solosan is used to
- flush out bulk tanks, eliminating the need for peracetic acid or caustic soda
- for cluster flushing and teat washing, reducing the risk of mastitis and cross-infection; and extending the life of cluster linings
- for foot-washing to kill the bacteria which cause digital dermatitis, and eliminate the need to use formalin or copper sulphate
- and Solosan can also be used to adjusts pH of the water supplied nearer to the ideal level of 6.7
The economics work best for herds of 300 or more, but will be worth investigating for smaller herds where there is the opportunity to obtain supplies of ground-source water which would otherwise be too contaminated to be used. For more detail go to www.solosan.co.uk
In poultry, Solosan has been shown to offer signficiant improvements in productivity both for broilers and egg-producers. The system is based on installing agenerating machine on site, which will dose Solosan direct into the birds' drinking water supply. The system has the benefit that it:
- reduces the biological challenges faced by the birds, leading to improvements in productivity of up to 4% (number of eggs produced over a full crop in fullscale trials)
- avoids sediment build-up depriving birds adequate water supply
- reduces the need for use of antibiotics and other treatments
- can be used in place of formaldehyde for shed cleaning and disinfection between crops
The economics work best for larger laying units and for bigger broiler farms. Solosan can however, be used for free-range and organic production.
